Jacques Whitford Stantec
Stantec, founded in 1954, provides professional consulting services in planning, engineering, architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, surveying, environmental sciences and business strategy. Continually striving to balance economic, environmental and social responsibilities, Stantec is recognized as a world-class leader and innovator in the delivery of sustainable solutions. We support public and private sector clients in a diverse range of markets, at every stage, from initial concept and financial feasibility to project completion and beyond. In simple terms, the world of Stantec is the water we drink, the routes we travel, the buildings we visit, the industries in which we work and the neighbourhoods we call home. Our services are offered through more than 10,000 employees operating from over 130 offices in North America.
The Corporate Residency Opportunity
We have crafted an opportunity within the Stantec-wide Sustainability Practice Area. We hope to attract a highly motivated and creative individual to join the small core team of sustainability practitioners whose task it is to advance sustainability at Stantec – both internally (Stantec operations) and by growing our sustainability consulting services, drawing upon the expertise, talent and passion of many hundreds of colleagues located in business units and offices across the firm. You would work for a Practice Area that has reach across North America. You would work with a broad network of individuals to meet our collective goals – experts in green buildings, climate change, community planning, policy and strategy, water, transportation, waste, alternative energy and many other areas. Your position would be a mix of internally focused initiatives and programs (for Stantec) along with business development and active consulting work for clients. Our team’s ultimate objective is to build the leading sustainability consulting practice in North America. Your opportunity is to get in on the ground floor of this strategic initiative.
The corporate residency position would focus on one or more of the following areas. There is some flexibility in terms of focus, and this will be determined based on background and interests:
- Corporate responsibility and sustainability
- Climate change
- Internal training and capacity development
- Strategy development, best practices, methods and approaches.
Job responsibilities
- Research various aspects of sustainability and apply learnings to the consulting environment
- Undertake market research and contribute to the development of realistic, focused strategies to achieve ‘transformational objectives’ – projects, clients, market penetration and growth in capacity to take advantage of business prospects in key sustainability spheres
- Write reports, develop presentations and present findings – internally (across the sustainability consulting practice) and externally to clients (if these opportunities present themselves).
We offer a position that requires
- Dynamism and creativity
- A history of academic excellence
- An ability to work independently and as part of a team
- A passion for sustainability
- Background in business, engineering, science, planning, business development, marketing or other relevant discipline
- Great verbal and written communication skills
- An analytic and strategic thinker
- In other words, ‘a best in class’ individual with excellent abilities at a junior level, willing to learn and contribute – a leader in the making.
What you will take away from the experience
- An understanding of the inner workings of a large consulting company
- Work within a highly motivated, hard-driving but fun and creative team that values innovation, and respects that even diligent efforts sometimes encounter and learn from detours and errors along the way
- Insight into the sustainability consulting industry
- A network of connections across Canada and the USA
- Improved knowledge of key sustainability topics (specific topics to be determined collaboratively)
- Experience in diverse aspects of a campaign to build a business in accord with sustainability principles, and effect substantive improvement in the sustainability principles applicable to businesses and communities
- Eight months of sustainability-related business experience on your résumé.
